great for what it is. Installed it on a vista 32-bit computer and worked right out of the box. perfect for the laptop that doesn't have one built-in. I would definitely would get this one again if I needed another.
Only using it for simple ISP dial up. Easy install, getting at least 46K, works just fine so far.
56K USB Modem Windows Mac Linux The USR5637 worked out-of-the-box on Puppy Linux 4.1.2 (just clicked connect and chose the defaults). (I just edited the single working "location" to match my current location). It was more trouble to install on my wife's Mac, since I am not very familiar with the Mac and the USR package insert failed to mention the need to click "advanced" in one panel. I got it installed for one Mac "location" but haven't found out how to get it to show up on the menu to install it for others. I'm especially pleased with the out-of-the-box performance on Linux, though my excuse for buying it was that my wife forgot her Apple modem when we came north for the summer and was threatening to buy a duplicate. I would give this product five stars except that I have only used it a couple of days and cannot assess reliability.
I got an HP laptop with Windows Vista that didn't have a modem installed. Got this to handle occasional telephone Internet access. Works well for me.
This USB modem works well with Mac OS X Leopard for web surfing, however the installation guide is not up to date for OS X 10.5.6 Leopard users. The performance is good, it seems to speed up surfing a little bit. In Dial Mode select "Wait for Dial tone before dialing" in drop down menu.
If you have OS X 10.5.6 or later do this:for STEP THREE: INSTALL THE MODEM DRIVER MAC OS X 10.4.3 OR LATERcomplete steps 1 through 5 then click on the ADVANCED button. Click OK.Once I did this I was able to connect to the internet using AOL. I had to figure out on my own how to install it.
Set Dialing to Tone and Sound to On or Off. Then do step 6, select the modem tab, in VENDOR select other, in MODEL select USRobotics 56K USB modem. Check Enable error correction and compression in modem.
In fact I am writing this review on a macbook with the USR5637 and AOL.Unlike the Apple USB modem this one comes with a thick telephone cable. I bought this from Amazon and am pleased with the results so far.
